The month of March is famous for ongoing celebrations dedicated to Women. From the 8th of March - during which we celebrate the worldwide day for the Defense of Women’s rights - to the 31st, many events do take place, showcasing inspirational leaders, women of all origins, in both ancient and modern societies.</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
JEADER (Young African Entrepreneurs working towards the Regional Economic Development) grabbed such an opportunity to celebrate women, once again, through the Super Women Leadership Conference (SWLC). This 3rd edition of the SWLC took place at Novotel Hotel on Saturday, March 18th starting 3:00 PM. They were more than 230 participants, to be part of this amazing journey, celebrating inspiring Senegalese women who delivered a pitch on the topic of this Year: TRANSFORM’ACTION.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkw3pC_SXJMkROFm8VNn4SqLnZmLGn5tt0YOVQfbREEunIHnLZPnWO9RB_qrQ3GXYlmCO0EUzjT05WFz05naUKPKRM-CHKqQOFiToxsV7eoVmOsYXmvJRuSqNgeyv_JGeFK9UtdplKVf9v/s1600/17436325_789619044526966_8620317712889743564_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkw3pC_SXJMkROFm8VNn4SqLnZmLGn5tt0YOVQfbREEunIHnLZPnWO9RB_qrQ3GXYlmCO0EUzjT05WFz05naUKPKRM-CHKqQOFiToxsV7eoVmOsYXmvJRuSqNgeyv_JGeFK9UtdplKVf9v/s320/17436325_789619044526966_8620317712889743564_o.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pg/IMAJEADER/photos/?tab=album&album_id=789618041193733" target="_blank">SWLC </a>is an event organized during the “month of women”. It invites and acknowledges women who distinguish themselves in various sectors and is based essentially on the spirit of Entrepreneurship and Creativity. And for the second Year in a roll, the event was organized with the sponsorship of the Us Embassy in Dakar / Senegal and did reward 10 speakers with the “Jigeenindeer” Award, identifying them as leaders or pioneers in their area of expertise.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Knowing that JEADER is really focused in building the next generations of Leaders, we consider women as a key element in the development of our nation. Those amazing women speak about their motivations and the hindrances they went through. They are also invited to talk about how it feels to be a Female Leader. The event does not only convey famous people, but it also promotes Leadership by rewarding and giving the floor to anonymous, in a way to urge every woman, beside their age, their handicap or their level of literacy to believe in themselves and their abilities to bring some change for their communities.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Did I hear you say “TRANSFORM’ACTION”?</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhndWEcaTw8SE-KTONN8msar8rRUd56i_1-rM-LtAc_jfzbQUgH7U-rxnYd1qLqK-4dNxWh-GdICMEI_bqXGHM6Ysb4PXICSUE2Ui4QtJr1p-Hp1PHUuJXjvjqrvOnZmqL1FF9AobAe_HS1/s1600/Capture1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="181" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhndWEcaTw8SE-KTONN8msar8rRUd56i_1-rM-LtAc_jfzbQUgH7U-rxnYd1qLqK-4dNxWh-GdICMEI_bqXGHM6Ysb4PXICSUE2Ui4QtJr1p-Hp1PHUuJXjvjqrvOnZmqL1FF9AobAe_HS1/s320/Capture1.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“Actions speak louder than words!” At JEADER, we profoundly believe that the impact of women empowerment goes beyond speeches or propagandas. We see it as a result of a combination of great ideas and courageous initiatives with visible impacts. It is according to this belief that we have chosen “TRANSFORM’ACTION” as the theme of this <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pg/IMAJEADER/photos/?tab=album&album_id=789618041193733" target="_blank">SWLC </a>going into transforming women’s devotion and creativity to concrete actions that will foster the emergence of the country.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We then decided to promote Art and specifically Painting during this event, making sure that we highlight the tremendous work delivered by young Senegalese artist. First, with a mini fashion show meant to display and feature the latest collection of ABC-Aduuna Bul Comprendre, named ZEN’ART, handmade printed dresses designed 100% by ABC. We also had the participation of the genious KING MO who did paint a masterpiece inspired both by the Logo of the Super Women Leadership Conference, and a Butterfly, symbol of TRANSFORM’ACTION, designed by JEADER Members.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As a symbol of transformation, arts and crafts were also leveraged with handmade goodies from “Ngaay Mekhe” and some pottery inspired by SOURD’ART, Abdoulaye Diène et Mariama Fall, who are deaf, but yet did manage to make of their art, an anthem of Senegalese culture. As every year, a giveaway was offered to the top 100 women who would come on time!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>The Speakers </b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This edition has seen the presence of Mrs. Martina Boustani, Charge of the US Embassy in Senegal and Mrs. Oulimata Sarr, Regional advisor of UN Women in Senegal, as a Keynote Speaker. Not only, was speech driven by Women economic empowerment, but it was a celebration of outstanding capabilities of Senegalese women, should that be in manufacturing industry, agribusiness, education, health & Social care, technology, fashion, beauty and design. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There was a panel with the topic “Female leadership and its role in the transformation of Africa” chaired by Mrs. Rokhaya Dièye, President of the NGO LEAD Senegal and with the the intervention of Mrs. Mame Mbayang Diome, Member of the Parliament, Mrs. Aissatou Diallo, YALI Fellow 2014 and Mrs. Oumoul Khairy Tandian, sociologist.</div>

JEADER Team, could not celebrate this SWLC, without having some thoughts for Late Yoni Rassoul Diongue, one of the jigeenindeer of JEADER in 2016 and a true ambassador of Transform’Action!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A fundraising was organized during the event, with the great leadership of the Sokhna Mbathio Ndiaye, YALI Fellow 2015. More than 480.000 XOF were taken from few of her books sold, 3 paintings of her and fundraising from the crowd. Part of this money is meant to support his family, and another part is meant to be invested in his Association HANDYCAPABLE to serve as a capital for the recipients of her association. Exceptionally, the 2017 jigeenindeer trophy was inspired by the famous drawing of our dearest Yoni Rassoul.</div>

</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7QPXUFOh7KWvSLJeLI4oGbsoJKW5zvyQWb9iV3Gz7TtJgl6iXMrkazYCaKMOGPyjFMI-n-F0xCM1iFH-_wOM_3usSAZHodlE-qQC-PxbNaPepY0a08iKWhZiQ5D2AWBWk-wUhdB0YRzw7/s1600/NAG+and+Dangote.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="271" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7QPXUFOh7KWvSLJeLI4oGbsoJKW5zvyQWb9iV3Gz7TtJgl6iXMrkazYCaKMOGPyjFMI-n-F0xCM1iFH-_wOM_3usSAZHodlE-qQC-PxbNaPepY0a08iKWhZiQ5D2AWBWk-wUhdB0YRzw7/s320/NAG+and+Dangote.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Couple of weeks ago, I had the privilege to be among the Young entrepreneurs who had the opportunity to meet with <a href="https://www.forbes.com/profile/aliko-dangote/" target="_blank">Dangote Aliko</a>, known as "the richest man in Africa", one of the most renowned and biggest influencer in Africa. It was a unique moment,going beyond a typical pitch. Indeed, it was 30 crutial minutes when this great man deeply took his time to respond to questions and share his beliefs. And as I had taken note of 30 things I have learnt from such an interlock… After a moment of brainstorming, I narrowed it down and finally came up with the 15 things to capture the essence of this meeting with M. Dangote...</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>1. Dare to share</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The first lesson was taught by the man who invited us to discover the amazing city of Marrakech. Amadou Diaw, the Founder of the Biggest Private University in Francophone West Africa decided to gather all of us together, in order to discuss about the "St Louis Forum". He has always believed in African Youth and has a strong belief in the power of sharing. And this unique opportunity he gave me to speak on behalf of the team, demonstrates such a statement.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>2. Don’t lose opportunities</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
To the question asked by one of the entrepreneurs, regarding how he became such an influential entrepreneur, Dangote's answer was straight. He does believe that Entrepreneurship is all about opportunities. I bet most of the influential people would just tell you how “great they are” instead, he just mentioned that his secret was his capability to identify opportunities not only to invest, but to establish the Dangote Group at the age of just 20, moving it from a small trading firm, to one of the biggest conglomerates in Africa, with branches in Benin, Ghana, Nigeria, Togo, Senegal …</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>3. Everything happens for a reason!</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Between the young boy who would buy and and sell boxes of sweets just to make money and the business man he became, there is food for thoughts. He did not just wake up and start doing business, even if his family used to be wealthy, he actually work hard to reach his success... He mentioned many times the how important it was to set the pace to success as everything happens for a reason…</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>4. What got you here, won’t get you there …</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I mentioned earlier that it all started with a small company, then the organization focused on food industry, on cement manufacturing, on sugar trade and later on soft drinks… And he emphasized many times on the word “diversification”. Definitely because when you want to survive in an extremely competitive environment, you have to analyze the trends of the market, of course identifying opportunities as mentioned earlier, but most importantly, you need to understand that “whatever you start today, your competitor can do, even better, tomorrow”. So the more you get into diversification, the more you tend to have a competitive advantage…</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>5. Always have your vision in mind</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“Because you have a long way to go, you cannot afford not to have a vision”. This was the whole thing I took from this interlock. In fact, it happens that from time to time, we lose focus. At the question what’s the piece of advice you’d give to the next generation of entrepreneurs, M. Dangote repeated “do not lose focus on what your vision is…” </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>6. Africa’s future is in your hands</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Surprisingly enough, the richest man of the world did insist in the fact of having a “healthy life, and sleeping enough”. Sincerely, that’s not something I was expecting, I was quiet surprised actually. But then he later explained that as the next generation of leaders, we did not have the right to be “compromised”. What else could we add to that, in a world where “rumor has it”. Having such a man believing so much in us being the next generation of leaders, and get him referring to the fact that one of the reason why he was investing that much in Africa was because, the future is here…</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>7. Be bold, Think Big.</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“If you don’t thing big, you can’t grow” is one other sentence he did repeat. The one thing he considers our generation is lacking of, is to dare to create. At the era of Internet and new technologies, his suggestion is to dare to use our brain to create something which can benefit the community- thinking out of the box and setting the trend. But, and of course there is a “But” he insisted in the fact of identifying our own strengths and weaknesses, in order to address them.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>8. Know your limits and go beyond…</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
"Once we accept our limits, we go beyond them". Albert Einstein said. People are often hedged in by boundaries, most of which are mental barriers that they themselves create. Mr Dangote's advice is to identify our limits and go beyond them!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>9. Anticipate , dare to innovate</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
When you’re imaginative, even if you are lacking resources, you can still predict future trends in the market and propose something worth the investment. For example, back in 1990, Dangote did ask to the Central Bank of Nigeria to allow his transport company to take care of their fleet of vehicles. At that time and at that age, not only it was challenging, but it took some risks and couple of investments, but the end result was a successful and worthy initiative that paid off.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>10. Make the best out of limited resources</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
From a family living in Kano, and a grandfather who was an influencer, he used to be challenged. This is the reason why he encourages Youth to make the best out of limited resources, as not everyone has the chance to find an investor. And in fact, because you’re able to get the best out of such a limited investment, a VC would be more willing to invest in you, rather than in your project. It’s all about sustainability....</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>11. Education is the basis</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Don’t get tired of learning. Never get tired of learning. He calls out the fact that most of young people are eager to finish their studies and start a business, not knowing that you have to learn how to handle a business and how to deal with Human resources. Management is not just about assets, it’s about making sure that you have the right skills to stand in front of your team and tell them something which is worth the respect they will give you. If you have nothing to teach them, people will quickly step back. As he repeated several times, “Education is the pillar”.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>12. Life is made of Up & Downs</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He mentioned something spiritual. Life is not just about Ups, you also need to foresee the issues and threats, coming up your way. And you need to plan for that not only in terms of finance but in terms of resources. Life is not all perfect, you have Ups and Downs and you need to deal with it. You need to save money as you get at your peak, because there might be days where you may not get enough to sustain your entrepreneurial journey.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>13. Failing is ok, as long as you realize why you did fail...</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Of course he made bad decisions, and because he learnt from it, he was able to apply his learning in the other businesses he would start. Here is what he answered to an Entrepreneur asking what it is to fail as a entrepreneur. Not only, there is a need to understand why you failed, but you definitely need to do it quickly, as your competitor won’t give you the time to come back….</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>14. To whom much is given, much is expected</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Mr Dangote invited us not to forget our community. In other words, he wants us to help the others as much as we have been supported at some point of time. In his vision, if we were meant to help each other in Africa and not always reach at foreigners, if we were willing to invest in our continent, rather than putting our investments outside of our countries, we would help Africa make a huge shift economically.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>15. Be Humble ….</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Is there was one thing to take away, that’s humility. A man worth Billions taking such a time to talk about FOREX issues in Nigeria, and vision for next generation of leaders, without complaints, and always with a smile, make me respect this man, beyond his fortune and the commit he has to develop his business, leaving a legacy as a leader, a true entrepreneur, a pioneer…</div>

It was a blessing for me to visit and meet with with the Executive Director of the Penn Center where the first school for freed slaves took place in the Unites States in 1862.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Most fascinating I met Gullah people for the first time ever. Had lunch in a Gullah restaurant and been offered a Gullah Music CD. These people were so kind and had so much love for me. Seeing someone coming from the motherland warmed their hearts and I was so happy I made them happy. They are entrepreneurs, they are historians, they are artists, they are chefs but they all have a common goal which is to preserve their culture!</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
For your information:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
'The Gullah are the descendants of enslaved Africans who lived in the Lowcountry regions of Georgia and South Carolina, which includes both the coastal plain and the Sea Islands.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Because of a period of relative isolation in rural areas, the Gullah developed a culture that has preserved much of the African linguistic and cultural heritage from various peoples, as well as absorbed new influences from the region. The Gullah people speak an English-based creole language containing many African loanwords and influenced by African languages in grammar and sentence structure.'</div>

In the Western history, women were expected to stay at home, where they were taught how to be good wives and good mothers, and of course how to stay pretty and silent. They felt dominated and oppressed economically, politically, and in their own bodies. They decided to speak up and fight for equality.</div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZ1iZ0xDym0OBj6XdpUr5LFogUeP38JlLkEJsXSsBYmDq0EhupoEnMG17zA9lmJbcSAf3oiqDAshMh3DocGD7UHN0ByXVCC54X83dAsBXOHcStLx3pTuPT8HmfmaOPZVbc5oDNo6GEJlvQ/s1600/pic.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZ1iZ0xDym0OBj6XdpUr5LFogUeP38JlLkEJsXSsBYmDq0EhupoEnMG17zA9lmJbcSAf3oiqDAshMh3DocGD7UHN0ByXVCC54X83dAsBXOHcStLx3pTuPT8HmfmaOPZVbc5oDNo6GEJlvQ/s200/pic.jpg" width="150" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
They got released from home and went to school. They now occupy positions their grandmothers and mothers never dared dream about. They boast economic independence, now able to afford everything a consumer society creates to anticipate their wildest desires. They contribute to the full functioning of the capitalist machine, just like the other half of humanity, with the exception of certain wives of well-to-do men.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
They are involved in political activities – some of them even leading countries – and one is about to lead the most powerful country if she manages not to get knocked out by the glass ceiling.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
They claim to be in control of their own bodies, while the pharmaceutical industry feeds them hormones that convert male fish into female, and the beauty industry (mainly controlled by men) defines how their bodies should look with the goal of selling more yogurt and cars.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
They are still expected to be good wives, mothers, and of course, pretty. They also have to be as competent as men at work, while making less money. The pressure to perform well, both at home and at work, is silently crushing them while their unrestrained pursuit of the perfect body leaves deep wounds but no visible scars.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And now they want to free all the ‘oppressed women’ around the world. As always, they have started by setting up universal rights for complex and plural women.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLzLBvpq_Jm5tFPEY6BojOiZzh0RnvZcD_gqjys54uU-UCfcbwgTV-0p6KAsKkTtFo9DqeAPdh9pIDodUy9fhbIhKZ5q_QVd7u0uXYG8MV36qshjD0yZTw943UYJH1Qhct_qUYKrTiPpmP/s1600/pic2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLzLBvpq_Jm5tFPEY6BojOiZzh0RnvZcD_gqjys54uU-UCfcbwgTV-0p6KAsKkTtFo9DqeAPdh9pIDodUy9fhbIhKZ5q_QVd7u0uXYG8MV36qshjD0yZTw943UYJH1Qhct_qUYKrTiPpmP/s400/pic2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In African history, women’s conditions have always been diverse, depending on their background as rural or urban women, whether their society is patriarchal or matriarchal, the ethnic group they belong to, the country or region they are from, and their personalities. Consequently, their need for equality differs dramatically depending on their social class, cultural background, beliefs, values, and the way they were socialized to be women in non-individualistic societies. They too used to be discriminated against because of their gender, notably in terms of access to lands and high-income activities. They too used to deal with arranged marriage, polygamy, female genital mutilation, rape, and domestic violence. Within the same Africa, women never stopped being the drivers of economic activities (in agriculture and trading). They never stopped influencing policy or familial decisions through their men (husbands and sons), who personify authority within their social group. They never stopped exercising spiritual power as priestesses. They never stopped organizing and fighting for their rights.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Being freed from the domination and oppression perpetrated by the other half of humanity is the least of their concerns. Revolutions and evolutions have to be driven by and within the oppressed people themselves. The contingencies of a given society impose changes naturally, but when the changes are dictated from the outside, it is called imperialism.</div>
</div>

The Senegalese Mandela Washington Fellows were received on Tuesday, August 2, by his Excellency Ambassador Babacar Diagne, representing President Macky Sall in Washington DC. As usual, the Senegalese young leaders were driven by their commitment to involve Senegalese authorities in all their endeavors. As they met President Sall in Dakar, in June, before leaving for the Mandela Fellowship in the United States, the Fellows found it relevant to visit the Embassy and Senior Senegalese officials in DC, showing once again their foresightedness and their respect to the Institutions of their beloved countries they are all committed to work for.</div>

Excellency Diagne praised the visit as one of the most relevant initiative. He congratulated each one of the fellows and inquired on their various profiles. At the onset of his speech Ambassador Diagne appreciated how young leaders, throughout all the country, are striving to push our nation forward. “ We were here when Réné Dumont wrote l’Afrique noire est mal partie. We were here also when Axelle Cabou published “ Et si l’Afrique Noire refusait le développement. Today, you are showing that change is possible. You are writing a new narrative. We are proud to have you to carry on the flag” said the Ambassador. He also shared his vision of Africa and Senegal in the coming years.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The discussion was very casual and Ambassador Diagne, commented on various topic raised by the fellows: his years at Radio Televison Sénégalaise, his stay in the Gambia as ambassador and his present work in DC. For him, it is always a privilege to serve our nation in the world first power, the United States. He reviewed the different lines of the Senegal-USA cooperation before introducing Colonel Abdourahim Kébé and Mamadou Kane. Colonnel Kébé insisted on the military cooperation, specifically the partnership with the state of Vermont. Mr Kane, outlined the economic cooperation, showing how Senegalese exportations in the USA have soared these recent years.</div>

The 25 young African leaders from 17 countries were on campus for six weeks this summer where they sharpened their skills through academic coursework, leadership training and networking.<br />

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Global Water Institute (GWI) took advantage of the unique opportunity of having top-notch young African leaders on campus by hosting an ideation session to gain their insight on our Water, Energy, Education and Economic Development Project (WE3) in Tanzania. The session yielded lively discussions and thoughtful input on our systems approach for rural village water systems in Tanzania.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The systems approach to development was a theme emphasized by most of the Fellows during their <a href="https://oia.osu.edu/news/4273-mandela-fellows-to-share-vision-for-progress-and-change-in-africa.html">Ignite talk</a> held on July 27th. <b><a href="http://senyaligb.blogspot.sn/p/ndeye-fatou-faye.html" onclick="window.open(this.href, 'Kiné Fatou FAYE', 'height=600, width=650, toolbar=no, menubar=no, scrollbars=no, resizable=no, location=no, directories=no, status=no'); return(false);"><i>Kiné Fatou FAYE</i></a></b>, Agronomic Engineer from Senegal asked, “It is surprising to note that when implementing agricultural related projects, nobody talks about the need for energy, but how do you expect farmers to process or preserve their produce if they do not have access to energy? And when implementing water projects nobody talks about agriculture or energy, but how do you expect the people to pump water in a place where they do not have access to power from the grid if they are not helped to tap energy sources such as solar, which is abundant in Africa?” The majority of the presentations emphasized the need for collaboration and coordination among experts from various fields as well as the importance of adopting the systems approach to project implementation for sustainable development.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
GWI commends the Fellows for all their hard work and wishes them well as they return to their home countries. The future of Africa is bright with these young leaders ready to take the helm.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The fellows were co-hosted at Ohio State by the <a href="http://glenn.osu.edu/">Glen College of Public Affairs</a> and the <a href="http://cas.osu.edu/">Center of African Studies</a>.<br />

L’Afrique noire est mal partie (Africa Is off to a bad start). This is the title of René Dumond's premonitory book written in 1962. In his book, the author criticizes strenuously the agricultural policies adopted by the new African states within a context of decolonization and the euphoria of independence. Though the book deals with agricultural policies, the same title could be applied to economic, cultural and military policies that have failed to yield the expected results. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_U6yE5xF94sZ-YYLzIsAuqiu6D17pjagUKtjbZQjpho_aQrr0mcMRI2cDGUeJuHxdKUOf9YR3PSWoSN2d0vao_fai0rtKH6xQh_RBwLj06-4YhInoIkpT0xlP6SxQjXBqMHTEpDhFjeEr/s1600/Nafi-2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_U6yE5xF94sZ-YYLzIsAuqiu6D17pjagUKtjbZQjpho_aQrr0mcMRI2cDGUeJuHxdKUOf9YR3PSWoSN2d0vao_fai0rtKH6xQh_RBwLj06-4YhInoIkpT0xlP6SxQjXBqMHTEpDhFjeEr/s200/Nafi-2.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Several complex factors can explain our failures. The most striking of these is the fact that decolonization occurred only on paper, while the mindsets remain colonized. In the wake of independence, dependency treaties were signed with the former colonizers. Though Western political models were blindly duplicated, re-establishing and improving our own indigenous institutions would have been best fit our conception of society. Moreover, external and competing powers have been shaping our policies with the complicity of incompetent leaders largely driven by their own interests and that of their entourage. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Therefore, over the last 50 years and notwithstanding strengths such as our youth, raw materials, fertile soils, wildlife, beaches, sun and water etc.; most African countries have been marked by wars, famines, epidemics and massive external debt. To save them, they have been bombarded by aid of all kinds, provided by international rescuers who are not always inspired by humanitarian aims. Up until today, one of the wealthiest continents in the world in terms of natural resources remains unable to respond to the most basic needs (food, education and health) of its people, and even less able to guarantee territorial security. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
During this particular time when the threat of terrorism is destabilizing our continent, Africa tends to outsource the strategic task of its defence to “rescuers” who are seeking a respectable justification to secure wells and mines, or an endangered ‘protégé’. But who is to blame for our fate? We have been inexorably pointing out the responsibility of foreign powers. In their defence, they are legitimately preserving their own interests and the material well-being of their people. In contrast, our leaders are mostly concerned about diverting our assets in tax havens, ‘their heaven’, breaking opposition and holding on to power. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Following long periods of growing afro-pessimism, here are just a few of the headlines of respectable international journals in recent years: Africa rising; A hopeful continent; Emerging Africa; and Africa – the great opportunity. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But for whom is Africa rising, emerging and providing opportunities? What is the continent hopeful for? </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Global demand of Africa’s resources is increasing, and the major powers hope to secure their needs in terms of raw materials and fertile soils. Multinationals operating in strategic sectors has risen, and foreign investors are hoping for a higher and rapid return on investments. The GDP of a few African countries is also rising, along with the bank deposits of a few African kleptocratic elites. Meanwhile, increasing numbers of Africans declare they cannot eat economic growth. While more and more Chinese and European migrants are seeking opportunities in our continent, the cost of living and the unemployment levels are relentlessly rising. Furthermore, hope among youth for a better life is decreasing. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The scramble for the big cake of Africa is being repeated with some of our leaders taking the role of insane traders of our future. In order to break this vicious circle, solutions to Africa’s problems must receive answers arising directly from the Africans themselves. To realize this, a critical mass of skilled and educated Africans, dedicated to thinking for our future are needed. My hopes lie on our new generation of young African leaders who feel a sense of duty to stop the looting of Africa, and enhance their people’s lives. Here are some areas where I believe that reforms could significantly change lives of generations of Africans: Agriculture, Education, Institutions and Defence. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
With respect to agriculture, better management of fertile lands and policies supporting local farmers and promoting jobs in agriculture could help to deal with our food security. To emerge many Africans from poverty, our education system must teach our children how to feed our people, how to enhance the value of our raw resources; how to understand ICT systems, and how to develop the manufacturing sector. With regards to institutions, a deep reform that will facilitate fair distribution of power and accountability among several stakeholders of our societies would help increase transparency, notably in the management of Public Finances. Furthermore, to address our global, regional, trans-regional and trans-national security challenges, a skilled, well-equipped and united African Army is needed desperately.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In a system trapped in corruption and impunity, the task of turning around the fate of our people, even to a modest level, might appear daunting for young leaders. Nevertheless, as a colleague put it: “he who wishes to bring positive change in a failed system ought to sup with the devil using a long spoon, while retaining the conscience of an angel”.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Nafi Tassou*</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

Wagner College on Staten Island (SI), New York City (NYC), is a host institution for President Obama’s Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders, the flagship program of the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI). The Mandela Washington Fellowship (MWF) aims to empower young African leaders through academic coursework, leadership training, mentoring, networking, professional opportunities, and support for activities in their communities. From June 17 through July 31, Wagner is hosting 25 competitively selected young Africans who will participate in a six-week academic institute on Civic Leadership, part of the larger group of 1,000 Mandela Washington Fellows being hosted in 40 programs at 37 colleges and universities across the United States this summer.<br />

<b><b>First impressions</b></b></div>
<b>
</b>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The first week of the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders got off to a frenetic start! Of course this would be the case because idiomatically, New York is “the city that doesn’t sleep”, “the capital of the world” - right? </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
On my first day, the sun woke me up hard to realize we will have more than 15 hours of sun. At this time of the fellowship, many of us have had a harsh reality check about what we’re here to accomplish. Lesson learnt – if you want to stay awake and focused in class, take vitamins and other energy supplements, because early nights are out of the question!</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The content of the first week of coursework has offered us much opportunity to learn about the best way to make first impressions. This was a time to get to know each other as fellows, and to introduce ourselves to the college and its partners – never before have I had to speak this much about myself! From Academic and support staff, to Staten Island African community members, to our coaches and our college football mentees, to the varying religious groups and even random people on the streets; everybody wants to know about us!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Of all the leadership development sessions of the week, my favorite was undoubtedly the one with Celeste Van Nice, Assistant Director of the center for Academic and Career Engagement. She helped to know more about ourselves with the Myers-Briggs personality test that gave us insights into how we interact with the world and process information. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Dr. Ruta Shah-Gordon (MWF coordinator and Vice President of Internationalization, Intercultural Affairs, and Campus Life at Wagner College) helped us articulate the moral imperative of each of our work, and challenged us to examine what transparency in the work place really means. The debate culminated in the understanding that being transparent is not about freely offering confidential organizational details, but it has more to do with one’s thoughts, feelings and motives being easily perceived by those who trust us to lead them. And this was the most powerful take away from the week. Other topics covered include “Public Private Partnerships and Urbanization”, “Ways to collaborate here and at home”, as well as a talk by the President of Wagner College, Dr. Richard Guarasci on “Building leadership from the community up”. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
To wrap up the week’s formal leadership sessions, we completed a small group assignment on creating an elevator pitch– finding the right words to pitch yourself and your ideas in a way that gets people to listen. Although the group work process itself was frustratingly tedious, this powerful exercise demonstrated just how important it is to appeal to your audience’s emotions, show passion and have a conversation rather than make a presentation. In all stakeholder relations, we were encouraged to “first sell yourself, then the organization, followed lastly by the product/service”. This firmly reinforced what I’ve come to learn over the years – people must like you first before they give you money. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We also met with our HUB leaders – mine is Scott Warren, Executive Director of Generation Citizen, an organization that aims to close the civic education gap by promoting civic engagement among underrepresented youth.</div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkPh39pXtxbPLSgq-aY4xyyfeR7v7-jgBJqDkQnwkSsjSpi-MQXk_MuDFZVlVVmFazGXbOeVaKg1lvVg_kAninqpmnnTymxCf9SexuamuBhR0xd_bB4aXrXnYdglRyLD5XDhPRnSlGWdC9/s1600/pap2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="230" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkPh39pXtxbPLSgq-aY4xyyfeR7v7-jgBJqDkQnwkSsjSpi-MQXk_MuDFZVlVVmFazGXbOeVaKg1lvVg_kAninqpmnnTymxCf9SexuamuBhR0xd_bB4aXrXnYdglRyLD5XDhPRnSlGWdC9/s320/pap2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>On a personal note…</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
My time here has not been without socializing, probably a little too much for the first weeks, but a welcome break from the seriousness of the program and a great opportunity for cultural exchange with Americans and fellow Africans alike. The first experience was in Port Richmond, a working class, largely African American and Mexican neighborhood on Staten Island where Wagner College has built partnerships with local non-profits for civic engagement activities with their students. That evening, we enjoyed our first non-American meal at an acclaimed local Mexican restaurant.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We are in New York and it’s the summer; everyone is talking about the Summer Stage the largest FREE performing arts festival in New York City. Presenting artists and genres that reflect the diverse cultures and communities in neighborhood parks across the five boroughs, So far, I have attended two hip hop concerts, with performances by some of the legendary artists from the 80s and 90s. And if you’re like me, you’ll know that this was real hip hop! I have had the chance to meet Hip Hop legend such as Big Daddy Kane, Buckshot, Lil Fame, Smiff N Wessun, Rock (Heltah Skeltah), etc.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I have also met some of my friends from the City that never sleeps and they took me to several places in Brooklyn like the Brooklyn’ commodore Barry Park that I really appreciated for its diversity, Moshod an African shop in 689 Fulton St Brooklyn one of the first businesses in the street owned by a Nigerian and met with Muslim community. I also had the chance to taste some good Thai food and met amazing people.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This week was really one of the best of my life so far. Not only meeting one of my favorite rap groups but also learning a lot with my other fellows and become more open minded. </div>
<br />

What do the internet and Senegal have in common? They have both been reinvigorated by Awa Caba, a young and energetic entrepreneur hailing from Dakar, Senegal. Caba, a Mandela Washington Fellow at the University of Iowa, is committed to connecting business women in Senegal with the internet in order to grow their selling power and influence.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizFq3UkGbNraRlmzkap7pY4gzbdgZ5Tu7wyi2ZNSBZ7JzFfw7eGFqpYv1Raem7OEbNqEAnU0aw5oqhQ6GGOec-zNZtZhiBKV7We1YhFW-YxvvgoIRyWSphXQuLYNlWfDFAcWdWkvHkismb/s1600/Awa-2-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizFq3UkGbNraRlmzkap7pY4gzbdgZ5Tu7wyi2ZNSBZ7JzFfw7eGFqpYv1Raem7OEbNqEAnU0aw5oqhQ6GGOec-zNZtZhiBKV7We1YhFW-YxvvgoIRyWSphXQuLYNlWfDFAcWdWkvHkismb/s320/Awa-2-1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Caba studied engineering and computer science at Ecole Superieure Polytechnique. After receiving her degree, she started her own business. Caba says, “I wanted to give rural women access to the marketplace. Right now, they have no visibility except for the international fair that takes place in Senegal once a year. This is their only chance to access a sizeable market and it is not enough to keep their businesses afloat.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“Knowing this, I decided to build an e-commerce platform to bring women producers closer to consumers. These women do not have internet and can’t comprehend the opportunity that the internet can bring them and their business. They are distrustful of technology and yet it is a way to enable themselves and gain power. I serve as the link between these women and the internet. I have to communicate the benefits of the internet, like worldwide visibility and market power, to them and persuade them to get connected.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Caba has big dreams for improving the lives of business women in her country, which she backs up with relentless energy and dedication. She works full time on her company, with the help of two full-time employees and two part-time employees. Each Monday, her team meets to review what’s going on in the business. She also meets with partners of her business in order to gain more clients and secure funding. Somehow, she finds the time to talk with potential clients, too.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Her business is called Sooretul, which means “It’s not so far” in a local language. As Caba puts it, “My company wants women to know that it’s not so far between them and the marketplace, it’s just the internet that they need to use to get there and be successful business women.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
When Caba isn’t busy with Sooretul, she works on other organizations. “I co-founded a tech hub for women in science, called Jjiguene Tech Hub. Jjiguene means women, so the foundation of this organization is helping women embrace technology and science.” Caba’s role with this organization includes scheduling training for girls and women and serving as a role model for the females there who would like to start a business.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“Then I also work with another organization that promotes young Senegalese people in agriculture, called Yeesal AgriHub. Yeesal means innovation, so this organization is centrally rooted in agricultural innovation. Yeesal is based in Thiés, Senegal, which is 70 kilometers away from my hometown of Dakar. I travel to Thiés twice a month in order to work on the project and build a community. We are building an innovative application to help farmers manage their work.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Caba has brought this innovative mindset to America for the Mandela Washington Fellowship, which is her second visit to the United States. “When I was at university, I was selected to participate in the 2011 Imagine Cup hosted in New York by Microsoft. After the trip to the States, I visited the US Embassy in Senegal frequently, as they wanted to build a community with the people who had participated in trips to the States. It was the Embassy that told me about the Mandela Washington Fellowship in 2012.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“At the time, I was not ready to apply. I was just starting a business, just finishing my degree, and I had a lot of things to do. I decided I would get two years of experience working at my business, and then I would apply. And I did, although it was a challenge.” Caba says that when she first learned that she was a candidate for the program, Senegal had over 1,050 applicants. “That list was narrowed down to 50 and then 30, so I feel lucky to be here.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Caba’s gratitude motivates her to take all that she can from the program lessons, which she says “are very practical. The lessons are paired with encouragement to practice our pitches. I meet people on the street and they want to hear what I’m working on and who I am, so I always have to be ready to give my elevator pitch!”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The instructors have also made an impact on Caba and her plans for her business. “All of the instructors are here and ready to help you. They give you tools to manage your business, know your customers, and know your value proposition. I can reach out and touch a point of weakness in my business and someone is there to teach me how to move past that weakness.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Mandela Washington Program experience in Iowa, Caba says, is very different from the experience she had in New York.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“I feel like I can make a difference here. In New York, it was so busy and loud. But Iowa is so green, healthy, and calm. I feel at home here due to the people’s hospitality. It reminds me of my country. Senegal is known as the country of hospitality, so I feel at home in Iowa.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“Before I came here, no one in Senegal knew about Iowa. After traveling to Iowa, I can bring back my experiences and tell them that it’s nice!”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As Caba looks forward to her return to Senegal, she is filled with hope. After networking with the other Fellows, she believes she can implement her projects in other countries in Africa, too. “The UI Fellows come from 18 countries, and as I meet with the Fellows and learn about their countries, I see that I can implement my business anywhere. I came to the United States, but I am discovering new countries in Africa, too.”</div>

When I got informed that I would be “Coming to America”, I was first excited to meet all my African fellows in one place and learn from them. I was also thrilled about being in The United States of America and seeing real American people in their natural environment, between McDonald's and Coca Cola. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So I met them, and I realized that “<i>Thiébou dieune</i>” * is the first word that springs to people’s minds when it comes to my country Senegal. I also learned that the Congolese culture goes beyond Papa Wemba and Sakasaka; discovered that Mauritius is located in Africa, and that Kenya is not only populated by lions and Maasai. I even met an Ethiopian who was not a marathoner; a Somali who was not starving to death and a Liberian free of Ebola. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
However, I was less prepared to meet diverse samples of Americans: African American, Asian American, Latino American and even Native American called “people of colour”. They did not have the bright Colgate smile of Donald Trump, his Hollywood tanned skin, and his shiny blond hair. They taught me that America (or should I say the Americas) was not a country and cannot be reduced to the United States of America. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6x1dYWjj_EPmntEvEkQPGG1fV8Y3sBRB6uQMoQ-BoKWEZCnhOOsdsy01cFR_Rx2IXAR28ANnO34xmHMLTnVVqiLSAX6ovIUK6vKtCt82-zwQ7uVu-fEXVHv6eqZhmNVWysHV9ip_HZ7N5/s1600/Nafi.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6x1dYWjj_EPmntEvEkQPGG1fV8Y3sBRB6uQMoQ-BoKWEZCnhOOsdsy01cFR_Rx2IXAR28ANnO34xmHMLTnVVqiLSAX6ovIUK6vKtCt82-zwQ7uVu-fEXVHv6eqZhmNVWysHV9ip_HZ7N5/s200/Nafi.jpg" width="198" /></a></div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I met brown Americans just like me, some even darker, others lighter. I heard them speak perfect English, some with this recognizable melodious accent of our far away countries, others not. I told them how much I was impressed by their country, a rainbow nation, that could inspire Africa in resolving its ethnic conflicts. I felt their sorrow of not seeing their colour blend homogeneously with that of the American flag. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
On my way to Chicago, I met a young African American, Kadil who could not locate Africa on a map, nor America his own country. “I am not that much educated” he told me, and I realized that USA and Africa shared the same problem of educating their young people. </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Nurtured by the myth of the American dream displayed on TV, I have seen in Madison that for some people, the American dream comes true directly in the streets, on the sidewalks, or in beautiful parks with hasty bystanders as spectators. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I have met “low income families” and I saw them depicted in their natural environment by some of my fellows. It reminded me of what I have seen in my country with western tourists who also wanted to capture poverty’s soul… and the saying “do not do to others what you would not want them to do to you” took all its meaning. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Sometimes, I feel scared by the idea that in THE country of freedom, young people celebrating life could get shot by another fellow citizen celebrating his right to carry a gun. The United States of America, the same country that has been nurturing the dreams of a better life of generations of young people, all over the world. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<i></i><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><i>Nafi Tassou* </i></i></div>
<i>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>*Tassou: in Senegal is a kind of speech with some rhythms, reminding one of rap music. </i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>*Thiébou dieune is the national dish of Senegal. It is made from fish, rice and tomato sauce. Other ingredients often include onions, carrots, cabbage, cassava and peanut oil. The name of the dish comes from Wolof words meaning "rice" (ceeb) and "fish" (jën).</i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

It is so fast! In one week I will be in Chicago. I am going to make the summary of my second week in the U.S.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Africa vs USA or Community vs Individualism.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
My apologies for some comments which could be considered generalist. I am in Bloomington; a city which doesn't reflect for me all aspects of the United States.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihbYzJOgKaAoenhONqdO3Up2Sdwrohh56f60PwfGuxIJoZYzYMqDsW1frDzIIwAAPAMi4ZM1ZP24LVtk066y9mNqmzFC_P1_rVNUcDLjzYZfVEP8sidl-xYW2wVvfyYwraKs5zZsOJvh8Z/s1600/doc.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihbYzJOgKaAoenhONqdO3Up2Sdwrohh56f60PwfGuxIJoZYzYMqDsW1frDzIIwAAPAMi4ZM1ZP24LVtk066y9mNqmzFC_P1_rVNUcDLjzYZfVEP8sidl-xYW2wVvfyYwraKs5zZsOJvh8Z/s320/doc.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
If there is a word that has a very deep meaning in the United States, it's liberty. It’s expressed through human diversity. All communities are present here and live in the respect of each other. This respect is made possible by strong laws that penalize any marginalization of individuals and ensure respect for fundamental rights. So I'll let your imagination make the illustrations.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We share many common issues: violence especially against women, gender disparities, marginalization of people with disabilities, </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The laws of the United States are based on the fact that the individual is central and his dignity must be preserved.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I like to say, in my home country I am a "Sy" before being Mamadou. Our societal organization is based on the community and the individual is only a link in a setting that defines his relationships.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This week helped me understand more the deep differences between our societies and especially the different looks we wear.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The principle of individualism has the same roots than capitalism. If some of its facets are mandatory, others require reflection.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So I always ask myself what is true. Is it fixed and rigid? or is it a consensus which can change over time and space?</div>

The Mandela Washington fellows placed at the University of Texas in Austin were pleased to welcome <a href="http://experts.utexas.edu/vijay_mahajan" target="_blank">Dr. Vijay Mahajan</a> to class. They received a wonderful lecture on growth and opportunity in Africa. It was insightful and inspiring.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Dr. Vijay Mahajan holds the John P. Harbin Centennial Chair in Business at Mccombs School of Business, University of Texas at Austin. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He wrote “<i><a href="http://ptgmedia.pearsoncmg.com/images/9780132339421/samplepages/0132339420.pdf" target="_blank">Africa Rising: How 900 Million African Consumers Offer More Than You Think</a></i>” (Wharton School Publishing) after a journey across Africa (including our beloved country, Senegal) over a period of three years.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqYvI91uEaOgNTsX0oGV0DnE6GdaXP2D6Dp9zS2fWQPUMlRKtAh25fmR9Qd1lfSPyKz9iE2TPTLSXZCjHcnOUnFOfQ1EkWIolURFWjJKezJhyphenhyphenTEzpHGNwuZUSO8aTjon8NGzRf0PUVUD5B/s1600/IMG_20160628_125731.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqYvI91uEaOgNTsX0oGV0DnE6GdaXP2D6Dp9zS2fWQPUMlRKtAh25fmR9Qd1lfSPyKz9iE2TPTLSXZCjHcnOUnFOfQ1EkWIolURFWjJKezJhyphenhyphenTEzpHGNwuZUSO8aTjon8NGzRf0PUVUD5B/s320/IMG_20160628_125731.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He shared with the fellows his powerful vision about the Africa rising, after being swayed by the constant wave of negativity about Africa in the mainstream media.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
His speech was not about politics, but about very positive spirit of the entrepreneurs who are trying to make a difference in this consumer market. According to Dr. Mahajan, “Africa has some of the poorest nations in the world, but it is wealthier across the continent than India".</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
During his presentation, Dr. Mahajan broke down the African market into three segments–Africa One, the small minority of people with incomes similar to top-earners in the West; Africa Two, the vast middle class; and Africa Three, the underclass whose members are striving to reach Africa Two. However, he asked the fellows to focus mostly on Africa Two, arguing that the sheer size of this market means it will be the driver of consumer spending in the future.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEieai2xW0co1O94SZwPGFdpyse6Gd6jRxGHpWre9Rl3ZNL5VLdg2Vfn1IVORpdVs5CEKXMaVA_NlvqvF_DBqAUQp8AT884tpcA7L-vSo0YPyCclhdnU5iQWJG3XArtoG8AiX8P_ZUdrSEO4/s1600/IMG-20160630-WA0091.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEieai2xW0co1O94SZwPGFdpyse6Gd6jRxGHpWre9Rl3ZNL5VLdg2Vfn1IVORpdVs5CEKXMaVA_NlvqvF_DBqAUQp8AT884tpcA7L-vSo0YPyCclhdnU5iQWJG3XArtoG8AiX8P_ZUdrSEO4/s320/IMG-20160630-WA0091.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
"<i>The large informal economy running throughout the continent might act as a buffer.</i>" said Dr. Mahajan.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He invited the fellows to also recognize also the important role of the African diaspora and the informal economy because they are enriching the continent in many different ways.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
All fellows are grateful to Dr. Mahajan. Indeed, he has been a wonderful supporter of the Mandela Washington Fellowship since its inception, besides that, he has generously offered to sponsor the Closing Luncheon & Certificate Presentation at the County Line BBQ at the end of the Institute!</div>

Good Day All,</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As we were having this class on Day 4 on how to make the best elevator pitch, I realised that we will always need someone in our lives, no matter the circumstances. Paying attention to and involving the people around us will help us be better persons but also better business partners.</div>

One week ago I left Dakar for the city of Bloomington after a short layover in Paris. I am going to make you a little summary of the week. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLx7y0CmsMVVEoS9aSMprMs7dUENKk5b60o4u-xiHK2Zr9tgb5J3w9CmvPzOtgCjuosDvFpoQTkbjWWK9bQT5MsUnTx7DovhaZkpn6CDO3vDpkA-1G2NqydLa9EGbpP9-h25UqaSbuxp31/s1600/doc9.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="150" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLx7y0CmsMVVEoS9aSMprMs7dUENKk5b60o4u-xiHK2Zr9tgb5J3w9CmvPzOtgCjuosDvFpoQTkbjWWK9bQT5MsUnTx7DovhaZkpn6CDO3vDpkA-1G2NqydLa9EGbpP9-h25UqaSbuxp31/s200/doc9.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
After more than 24 hours of travel with 3 planes I arrived safe in the state of Indiana in the USA. The program started the following day upon arrival. We started with a series of meeting focused on civic engagement and an orientation on medicine for myself. We also visited several institutions academic structures.</div>
</div>
<div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The gap between our countries is just astronomical. The university budget of my host university , is 10 times the budget of the state of Senegal.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So far, I have not seen a single garbage on the floors. The community of Bloomington is really open. At all corner of the street, they greet me. People are very friendly and warm. I believe in Dakar, I feel being in Africa. The reality I have started living is different from what I have been seeing on TV. People are respectful and they work hard to succeed.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The word freedom has a very deep meaning here and I am surprised by how people respect laws and the common interest. I realize how far behind we are when I saw colleges far better equipped than our best universities. Students have all the conditions to succeed in their studies. I was sad to see that we have not had similar opportunities but, I reminded myself that our merit is even greater than we have done without any means.</div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>

Dear friends, we have a lot to do. And I'm excited to return to Senegal in order to bring our stone to the building of our nation . We will continue to improve the wellbeing of our communities. Africa can be inspired by others and take it’s own way of development. This cannot be done without strong institutions , without a clear and effective separation of powers . </div>

Salam everyone, I’m Selly Raby Kane, the silent carp with big glasses of YALI Senegal. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
For information, I am fashion designer from Dakar and I was selected by the Mandela Fellowship Program for young african leaders of 2015. Clark Atlanta is my new home and yes, I’m back in School with militarized sunsets and sunrises. But this is another post, let’s jump into the heart of the matter: The departure for the US of A!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
You see, the experience we are living is worthy of a thriller movie.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Departure day, Thursday june 18th: After what we can call an afternoon of harassment by Big Daddy Kane who was concerned about my slowness in packing my stuff and getting ready, I gave up to his pressure and finally reached the airport 3 hours too early.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4OwNeoKMTvr-B6ggnuSgS5iG2QLrOxpOIku3uqmO4ePyiEIRDoJvwgEavRdkxFlY7Y8aGt4vqftL8CAU7bTpWbf72HgFaSZuCJH8JAjQGj-EEsxEGm_csF0DTAFfoxIU2tslig3rLOUTy/s1600/1.jpg"><img border="0" height="154" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4OwNeoKMTvr-B6ggnuSgS5iG2QLrOxpOIku3uqmO4ePyiEIRDoJvwgEavRdkxFlY7Y8aGt4vqftL8CAU7bTpWbf72HgFaSZuCJH8JAjQGj-EEsxEGm_csF0DTAFfoxIU2tslig3rLOUTy/s200/1.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
All the YALI from Senegal and Guinea eventually met at LSS Airport. We ganged up, YALI Invasion, then we all left Dakar for Paris our first stop before the US. From that moment on, things went south for me. My phone was stolen , I had a fight with a bipolar steward from Delta but I guess these can be considered as collateral damages of the first part of the story I am about to deliver.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
For this adventure, we left our country, forgetting the comfort of our lives, of our current statuses to redefine the goals we have set for ourselves in our careers, prospects, respective ambitions.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
How to impact the world?</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The billion dollar question.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We came to the US as we believe we have a contribution to make to the answers for our continent’s interrogations.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We left because we were chosen; we came because oh well, the name Obama triggers strange connections in our heads.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A concentration of 500 young Africans left the continent for a program that identified them as an essential part of the solution.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Here we are, facing our responsibilities. “What you gonna do YAALI ?!” (Professor Kimbro’s voice from CAU) </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I have landed at Clark Atlanta, Martin Luther King’s Fief. We live in a residency facing a building in which the resistance to the oppression exerted on the black community was forged. It’s simple, under each stone of Atlanta resides the story of resilient men and women who didn’t just talk about changing the world, they made it happen. They went to coal, strong of their stubbornness and re-shaped the future of countless black and global communities worldwide.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I have even crossed Cheikh Anta Diop’s portrait in a church … Inspiring</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
To me, these are the people that set the tone decades ago.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It doesn’t take a lot of people to change the world, it’s not a matter of statistic it’s a combination of Faith, Will, Impulsion and T I MI N G.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I, Selly Raby Kane believe this is the time to shake the lines and speak the voice of our continent in our own verbs, through our own narrative.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I want to impact the Creative industries of my continent by contributing to the rise of it’s underground art scenes.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I want to speak the voices of the ‘’OTHERS’’ from the continent and help us, making a living of our alternative creativity.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I am a woman of images. You will see more than you’ll read from me. It is time for me to be Quiet and to show you what my eyes have seen since june 19th!</div>

Well well well! Only three days to go and I feel like a steamroller has literally passed over my body…and more than one time! Anyway, it’s fine by me, I’m going to survive all the pre-departure preparation, all the stress, all the excitement, take my plane (by the way I have a plane phobia so If you heard about somebody turning a plane upside-down -not literally of course- because she is scared, that would be me) and have a great journey. I’m so eager to meet new people, to discover the US, to learn some new things! But one thing saddens me so…what about my Senegalese fellows who will not be there with me? </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Because let me tell you something, Senegalese Fellows are a tight team, a fierce one and most of all, a bright and fun one. Luckily, I will have the one and only El Hadji Mamadou Diongue with me in Miami. He doesn’t know it yet, but he will be my sidekick, we will be like Batman and Robin. Of course, I will not be Batman. What kind of crazy dude thinks that he is a bat? Have you ever seen a bat? Those things are ugly and scary as hell…Huh huh, I won’t have it, I prefer to be a male character than a bat. So Robin it is!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Back to the subject…I don’t know how it happened because on a human history scale, we only know each other since yesterday. But the time I get to know each of them was precious and I’m sure that every single person on this team is going to be a game changer. Look at us, do you feel that energy!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUB_L2FxkFbVQgtLNdKpXYs6OAJ8h2iv6WmXvt3L8RxauXw-zchURt4v6TJC1LTI4mSIerFObH_in6vCCbQKxZA4gLCqF1_m53AwOknE68Ercc2oedTLpXBWYhINJ8v_JnGoTKNTFSZYia/s1600/1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="132" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUB_L2FxkFbVQgtLNdKpXYs6OAJ8h2iv6WmXvt3L8RxauXw-zchURt4v6TJC1LTI4mSIerFObH_in6vCCbQKxZA4gLCqF1_m53AwOknE68Ercc2oedTLpXBWYhINJ8v_JnGoTKNTFSZYia/s200/1.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Now that you have seen this picture, I can make my transition about the topic of this article! Did you see how Barcelona won the Champions League…I feel bad for the Juvies (Koba and Sonko don’t cry…luckily, we had some tissues for them), it was almost painful to see that…Nah…I’m joking, I don’t feel bad at all. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Well I know, I’m like a diesel car, it takes time to start but when it’s done, it’s like a hurricane. Actually, the real subject is that Team Senegal was invited last week-end by Minaj a.k.a Vicky Victorine at her place.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
1) For an informal meet-up</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_4RRzvo88V9_wbtZ-bhLYGHSXe6CHzM_R7gDr0MKE0r9Q2PVwwZOZ1U-2u06NDZNzDidGncrmScufQiZZqxsNZ-J1YMxToL18gwKaUn3LI7EyWaDx9wGb7_n8wezWHfM1tgOUYrlOKlLr/s1600/2.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="132" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_4RRzvo88V9_wbtZ-bhLYGHSXe6CHzM_R7gDr0MKE0r9Q2PVwwZOZ1U-2u06NDZNzDidGncrmScufQiZZqxsNZ-J1YMxToL18gwKaUn3LI7EyWaDx9wGb7_n8wezWHfM1tgOUYrlOKlLr/s200/2.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
You see that…We were laughing, drinking. Our rap artist, Papa Aly Gueye was entertaining us, specially Minaj.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
2) To watch the Champion’s League finale </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKQIbcL6rCenpkf4maM7ZdDjdq3AxmCozRucwsugF9zL6FDbM7PPBMgSN6DTZNkxRIpWbvfFfs9-xXlK22rtKgU7TPXx-J6Y-PXI-Iad-A7hnWyNnl8ZYfCjV8MMXfcCNKrbAJ6A852rby/s1600/3.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="125" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKQIbcL6rCenpkf4maM7ZdDjdq3AxmCozRucwsugF9zL6FDbM7PPBMgSN6DTZNkxRIpWbvfFfs9-xXlK22rtKgU7TPXx-J6Y-PXI-Iad-A7hnWyNnl8ZYfCjV8MMXfcCNKrbAJ6A852rby/s200/3.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Yeah Yeah! Team Barça…</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
3) To take pictures of us as we are so photogenic</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4tbWuooauYlP__F_6nyJVOo1NccRe4NZ2RIcS7Z2nB71bWen0t2x9QMMr-Rc8TPZ_i_xoKhrVVnODe7gL4BZPZB8QoG4jXw26IdnYEUfg5eeMWP0BDYOMs6Mr4dLGaqqgsKpGZNiayD3j/s1600/4.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="132" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4tbWuooauYlP__F_6nyJVOo1NccRe4NZ2RIcS7Z2nB71bWen0t2x9QMMr-Rc8TPZ_i_xoKhrVVnODe7gL4BZPZB8QoG4jXw26IdnYEUfg5eeMWP0BDYOMs6Mr4dLGaqqgsKpGZNiayD3j/s200/4.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
4) To meet fellows from last year and and 5) To have a good time drinking and eating some good Senegalese appetizers. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So the meet-up…Everybody was not able to come, and those who did not come were really missed. Thanks to Selly Raby Kane, one of our stylist and stylish member, a professional photographer was with us to grasp the energy and it was amazing. We laugh, we smiled, we run, we jumped, we acted like we were stars but…seriously, have you ever seen a bunch of crazy people goofing around in the streets of Dakar followed by a photographer…Let me tell you that instead of stars, we were more perceived by the people in the streets like animals in a zoo.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJk3F9cssfKyjiwa9d98vxLHk_s8zMfJvuFhBDEyehuwHDZwWl_LToPITEpfz4r2w5_y3KJICyrF-TUZfLI7SRp3zm_Kc1FkGnONGFbHJWo45_KtfOc6WKzpimrBB3vtZgHBW1VqI7jDsh/s1600/5.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="133" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJk3F9cssfKyjiwa9d98vxLHk_s8zMfJvuFhBDEyehuwHDZwWl_LToPITEpfz4r2w5_y3KJICyrF-TUZfLI7SRp3zm_Kc1FkGnONGFbHJWo45_KtfOc6WKzpimrBB3vtZgHBW1VqI7jDsh/s200/5.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But we did not care and that’s what’s good with our team! See that!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
After the photo-shoot, we gathered around in Minaj’s house and it was really nice. Personally, I had the chance to talk with Koba, a 2014 Mandela Fellow, and it was great to have some useful piece of advice before leaving. As others 2014 Fellows were also there, everybody had the chance to talk about their journey and about ours to come. So this was interesting at different levels, we learned that the program will squeeze the very last drop out of us. Now that I am writing that, I reconsidering what I said about those bats…Maybe we should all be bats to be able to drink the very last drop of the program instead of the other way around. We also learned that we need to be careful with everything we do and say during the program, attitude is everything…And as we were already told by the Embassy, we have a responsibility to represent our country the best way we can. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
That was the serious part, but you know how parties are like, there is always a hidden side…The light and fun one, GOSSIPING…We actually learned that they were YALI weddings and YALI babies…Do you believe that? It’s great but I need to make a statement right now. NEPOTISM is not good, so those beautiful babies should not be Mandela Fellows by birth. If one day they want to follow the steps of their parents, they will have to suffer like us. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Well I think that’s all, the pictures will speak for themselves…but I must tell you one last thing, Minaj told me that after I left the party, a few people stayed till 3 a.m.! Don’t ask me what happened over there, I was not there. I guess that what happens in Minaj’s house stays in Minaj’s house :) </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAdjYFHcQCVAq6XZdIPZvIpcafluywWn4jCq0o41-5K2iOxhGs-6Bj7wA93wzeF4jzakjrBLhmJJ7kFrS0ocA72Ml2v5OMuZrFm-6W5HWKF4ImWGf36VuDa_-fCiBQGcsrfgmP_ciQj3Xe/s1600/6.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="132" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAdjYFHcQCVAq6XZdIPZvIpcafluywWn4jCq0o41-5K2iOxhGs-6Bj7wA93wzeF4jzakjrBLhmJJ7kFrS0ocA72Ml2v5OMuZrFm-6W5HWKF4ImWGf36VuDa_-fCiBQGcsrfgmP_ciQj3Xe/s200/6.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Sadly, Aissatou Sene the fourth Musketeer was not there and Minaj, Selly and I missed her. We will take a picture of the four of us very soon!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixQtPBJaJbhIVCE6gJt4TpG_5JdLMdxjnbiIiQcuuebUX1kJoWtJ4wDjqUCfd42bO4pqfw1sksO4IQtQFObCMUEub8-_XpriyzLSuU8GFoyQWYxueLLSDc2zoMFXoVgx73v67LlOMtThmA/s1600/7.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="132" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixQtPBJaJbhIVCE6gJt4TpG_5JdLMdxjnbiIiQcuuebUX1kJoWtJ4wDjqUCfd42bO4pqfw1sksO4IQtQFObCMUEub8-_XpriyzLSuU8GFoyQWYxueLLSDc2zoMFXoVgx73v67LlOMtThmA/s200/7.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
That did not stop us to feel like stars! Not to worry, It passed as soon as the reality hits us again!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
AND NOW…to end with a firework….Drum rolls everybody. I present you the dream team:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
